Plot- Analysis:
I was sitting in a café for lunch during a day in November. There was about 15 people in the dining room but a group of three girls walked in and caught my interests…
Girl 1 walks into the café, grabs her usual drink from the barista and walks towards the table where her friends are sitting:
Girl 2 & 3: “Hey girl! We haven’t seen you all day, what have you been up to?
Girl 1: “I know, I’m sorry but I’ve been busy writing my paper and getting caught up on my notes for English”
Girl 2: “why are you working on your paper when we’re leaving on Friday for vacation and it’s not due until the end of the semester?”
Girl 3: “because she wants to get it done and not leave it until it’s too late like you usually do”.
Girl 1: “That and I wanted to write down the ideas I had because they were flowing and coming so easily”.
Girl 3: “so we have news for you but we don’t know how to tell you this”
Girl 2 & 3 *look at each other*
Girl 1: “just spit it out”
Girl 2: “we saw your saw ex at the gym and he was doing bicep curls in the mirror and when he was leaving, he asked if I wanted to stop by his place and pick up your stuff”
Girl 1: “please tell me you said no because I told him not to be in contact with me, my friends or my family. God, I can’t believe he talked to you guys!”
Girl 3: “well I said no out of respect for you but..” *looks at girl 2*
Girl 2: “I said I would”
Girl 1: “why did you do that? I told you guys not to talk to him because of what he did and you’re completely ignoring my requests”.
Girl 2: “omg, who cares?! It’s been over six months since you’ve seen him and you and I both know that you guys have moved past your relationship so what difference does it make if I go over there to pick up your bag?
Girl 1: “it makes a huge difference and you know I would never talk to your ex if you asked me not to so why can’t you do the same for me?”
Girl 2: “can you stop being so dramatic and just accept the fact that I’m doing this for you?”
Girl 1: you’re not doing this for me, you’re doing this for yourself. It’s selfish and you know it!”
Girl 3: “maybe you should call him and tell him that you’re not coming over anymore and have him figure out another way to give back her stuff?”
Girl 1: *looks at girl 3 with sad eyes but turns to girl 2 and glares* “she won’t do it because she knows how much it bothers me and all she wants to do is play games because she’s bored with her uneventful life.”
Girl 2: “excuse me? My uneventful life?! My life isn’t boring at all but if it was, the only thing dragging it down is you! All you do I complain about school and when you’re not doing that, you’re complaining about how much you can’t wait to get out of here and move to a big city so you can follow your dreams and become a big-time journalist”.
Girl 3: “wow, take it easy. She’s speaking out of anger, don’t keep attacking her”
Girl 1: “excuse me for wanting to do something else besides live in a college town for the rest of my life”.
Girl 3: “guys keep it down, we’re in a public setting and people are starting to stare”
Girl 2: “Good, let them stare! They can look and see how much of a crazy person she is and I’m sure they’ll agree with me that she’s making a big deal out of nothing”.
Girl 1: “you know what, I’m out of here. If you really want to go over there and grab my bag you can, but don’t try to give it to me because I don’t want to see you for a long time.”
Girl 2: “that’s fine by me! I’ll just drop it off on your front door step so you don’t even have to open your door”.
Girl 3: “guys, please don’t act like this. We’ve been friends for too long to let some guy come in-between us like that.
Girl 1: “if this is what years of friendship looks like, I want nothing to do with it or her!”
*girl 1 leaves girl 2 & 3 at the table and storms out of the café*
The Finale:
What I took from this situation was that it seemed like there was a shift in power in their friendship. In the beginning of their conversation, their body language was open and welcoming but as the conversation carried on and started to become heated, their bodies started to get stiff and become very defensive. The one girl didn’t seem to want to relinquish the power she seemed to have over the other and she was using it to her advantage, which seemed unfair. The girl who seemed to be taking all the heat finally broke her silence, tried to fight back, but was unsuccessful and ended up leaving unsatisfied and hurt with how the situation unfolded. The only person who seemed to be looking at what happened from an outside point of view was their third friend who seemed to take the one girls’ side and was sticking up for her.
Wow, you definitely witnessed some crazy behavior!! I like the way that you wrote this. Because the plot was written from the actual events, it was like reading a book to me. It flowed easily and I was very entertained. Good description of characters too; I could imagine what the girls look like immediately. Great job!
