OBSERVATIONS

Play Name: Casual talk between friends

THE STAGE:

LOCATION: cafe, on campus, KAMLOOPS, BC, CANADA.

TIME: 2016 November, Third week. Afternoon.

SMELL: coffee bean smell and other beverages smell in the air.

ENVIRONMENT: little noisy, there were a lot of people sitting around. Mostly youngsters were present at the location. Mostly single and double couch were present at the location. The roof was made up of wood. Everything was well organised at the location. More than half of the floor was made up of concrete and remaining was wooden. Proper lightening was present at the location, light colour was white. The building was made up of modern architect.

COLOR: light and fade colors, light blue, fade blue, brown, and white.

TEMPERATURE: 08 Degrees Celsius, Humidity: 77%, Wind: 8km/h

Other details: He was wearing dark color sweater, dark blue formal pant, dark blue socks and semi formal fade brown shoes. He was wearing spectacles, due to eye sight problem. He was fit according to his age. The color of his hairs was grey. Subject seems to be Christian. He was having small hairs which were combed backward. He was having heavy sound.

Name: B

Age: Near around 42

Sex: Male

Skin color: white

Height: 6.2 ft

Other details: He was wearing light green small check shirt, dark blue jeans, black socks and semi formal dark brown shoes. He was wearing spectacles, due to eye sight problem. He was fit according to his age. The color of his hairs was grey and brown. Subject seems to be Christian. He was having medium sound pitch nor too high nor too low.

Name: C

Age: 19

Sex: Female

Skin color: Brown

Height: 5.6 ft

Other details: she was wearing casual clothes, her upper was of black color and track pants were also black. She was wearing long boots like horse riding boots and they were dark brown in color. She was having large black hairs. She was having low sound pitch.

Age: 19

Sex: Female

Skin color: Brown

Height: 5.6 ft

Other details: she was wearing semi-formal clothes. She was wearing light blue jean along with black sweater and blue coat on it. She seems to be from Hindu religion. She was having sharp sound.

SUBJECT: FIVE

Name: E

Age: 25

Sex: Male

Skin color: White

Height: 5.9 ft

Other details: he was wearing dark brown jacket and dark blue jeans and black sneakers. He was wearing spectacles and was busy in listening to music. He seems to be from Korea. He was having black hairs and small byes. He never spoke.

THE PLOT (ANALYSIS)

Here are some of the observation which were noticed by me while I was observing other subjects. In third week of the November 2016 I went to the cafe and I started observing 5 subjects. My main motive was to observe their behavior and further I am going to discuss about them. Subject A and B were sitting on one couch, C and D on one, E was sitting on wooden chair and I was sitting on wooden sofa chair.

Subject A was sitting facing subject B and B was sitting strait on the sofa and his face was towards A. A was constantly using his hand gestures while talking to B and in response B was using face gestures. They seemed to be good friend from long time. B was actively participating to the talk of A. They both were having good communication with each other.  While they were talking to each other B was eating sandwich. I heard some of their conversations, A was telling B about the things what his wife liked and they were going somewhere and he also talked about dogs and cats. B was talking about his friend, who owns a good business and also mentioned about his Trucking business. I started their observation around 12:30 and they left at 12:48. While they were leaving B picked up his garbage from the table and A picked up his black binder from the table.

As I noticed in men that they were sitting in expansive body posture, which means they were feeling more powerful and which also shows that they find it difficult to adjust in tight environment. As men were sitting on big couch they were sitting relaxed and in power posture by which they seemed to be confident and powerful. Secondly, the main thing which I noticed was that they were in their 40’s and not even once they touched their phones and they seemed to be punctual and well organized as A was having a black binder and he was wearing a watch . It seemed as if they believed in physical contact but on in social contact.

On the other side subject C and D was sitting together and E was sitting separately on chair. C was busy in her phone and D sitting with her on her left side. They were not talking much with each other. While talking with each other C was busy with her phone. After a few time some of their friends were passing from there and they stopped there for a while and they were having a good talk with each other. E was sitting alone on the chair and was busy in his phone and was listening to music or was watching video on his phone. He was using earphone while watching his phone. There was a bag in his lap on which he was keeping his hands and holding his phone. The main thing which was noticed between C, D and E was that they were using their mobile phone for most of the time rather than talking with each other. The rise of social media applies on these three subjects as they were influenced by social media. As according to (smith 2014) “Canadians are the most active facebook users in the world. Teens on the facebook have an average of 300 friends”. As present generation is addicted to social networking, which resulted them into lack of physical contact as I have noticed that they were busy with their phone in place of talking with each other. As today’s generation believe in social contact but not in physical contact.

I noticed that females were not taking more space while sitting which indicates that they are adjustable and doesn’t impose themselves. They were sitting on a small couch and they were calm and relaxed, which symbolizes that how quickly they adjusted with the situation. Both of them were trying that they were not taking much of space.

The main thing which I noticed in all the subject was that they were sharing common norms that they greeted each other before leaving the place. In Canadian culture greeting people is the most important norm which is being taught to us right from the childhood. Greeting people includes saying hello! , saying “see you” before leaving and have a good day. As C and D left at 12:48 and F at 12:50. C and D both greeted each other and left the place.

THE FINALE

While I was doing my observation, all the subject were present before me at the location. I am a male student. I normally observe people, but it was my first time that I observed people so deeply. I almost spent around 25 minutes while observing them and during that short period of time I observed 5 subject in a single sitting. The settings were natural where research took place and I learned a lot about the behavior of people while observing them.
